Running: A moment of freedom in London
Running: A moment of freedom in London

It’s often been said that if you’re tired of London, you’re tired of life. It’s impossible to tire of this vibrant epicenter of music, culture, fashion and fitness. For Georgina Hayfron, it’s the simple act of pulling on her running shoes and hitting the city streets of London that inspires and connects her to her city and its unique mix of rich history and dynamic modernity. She took us on a journey through her city, weaving stories through every beat of her feet on the pavement.

adidas Headphones: Why do you run?

Georgina: I run because I enjoy it. Running for me is not about chasing PBs. It's understanding how much my thoughts influence my actions. Giving myself a moment of freedom from the demands of day to day life. I've found my coping mechanism, which has given me the confidence to address whatever challenges life throws at me, head on!

aH: Do you prefer running by yourself or with friends?

G: As much as I cherish running with my friends, I really love my solo runs. Living in London can be quite full-on at times. There’s always something on your to-do list. I use my solo runs as an opportunity to put time into myself and connect with my thoughts. Much like winding down at the end of a long day.

aH: Is there one specific run/event that you’re particularly proud of and why?

G: The first half marathon I ever did will forever be etched in my memory. I remember being at the start line dreading the distance I had to complete. The furthest I had ever raced at that point was 10k. I felt so out of place and questioned what I was even doing there. The other runners seemed so fit, put together, discussing their times and pace. Then the race started and I enjoyed every minute of it. It felt like a massive festival! By the time I paid attention to how far I’d run, I only had two more miles left. It was such a wonderful experience.

aH: Is there a strong female running community in London?

G: The definitely is a strong female running community in London. A huge number of women participate in ultramarathons and triathlons. More than ever before I read about women being able to conquer the longer distances in races, which is incredible! There are various women running clubs dotted around London. It’s amazing to see the support we give each other as a community. We are stronger together. Running with a group really helped put aside any fears I had with running alone.

aH: Is there a style of music that helps give you a boost while you’re working out/running?

G: I usually just hit shuffle on my phone and let the random playlist surprise me. Having said that, 90s RnB will always put me in a good mood.

aH: What’s the most important thing you look for in workout headphones?

G: If I run, I sweat. So having headphones that are comfortable and can still function despite this, is a plus.

aH: What motivates you to keep running?

G: The opportunity to unlock something new about yourself. Sometimes it’s physical, like the ability to run further and faster. But more often it’s mental; a shift in your mindset. Being able to tune in with your body and truly understand how it feels and why. Sometimes I feel like my brain is full and running gives me an opportunity to filter out my thoughts and reach clarity.

aH: What’s your favourite area of London to run in?

G: The best areas for me to run are around the Royal Parks; Hyde park, Kensington Gardens, Green Park and St James Park. I often take a route that alternates between city streets and natural parks. It helps keep the run feel new and interesting. I prefer running along the quieter streets of London. They are usually the spots I haven’t explored as much. You can find real hidden gems – like street art, quirky street names and discover small local shops. There’s so much to learn and a wealth of history in London. I use some of the runs to explore the city a bit more and see it through the eyes of a tourist. Each area of London has its own unique identity.
